Introduction:
Located at the north-western side of the country with a population of approximately 2 Million people, Tabriz, is the capital of the East Azerbaijan province and the sixth most populous city in Iran. The city is one of the most prominent carpet production centers of Iran as well, with designers and knotters so professional, capable of displaying the most diverse patterns; from medallions at the center, and Herati motifs at the border, all the way to figural, pictorial, and even 3D patterns.
Description:
Classic Tabriz pieces feature a central medallion with all-over designs of floral motifs, echoing the characteristics of Ardabil pieces, yet each one is a unique work of art. As for the color combination, Tabriz carpets range from multicolored, bright renderings with blue or red fields to subdued palettes in shades of brown, ivory, saffron, and green. In a sense, there is no “typical” Tabriz design, yet the fine execution of patterns and balanced use of colours define the "typical" Tabriz work.
Tabriz pieces come almost exclusively from the city itself; the majority are knotted in production centers where there are quite a large number of looms. Different types of carpets are handmade in these manufacturing sites using local wool. The main characteristic of Azeri wool is its combination of sheer delicacy and incredible durability. As a result, Tabriz works always showcase a professional level of craftsmanship while being almost indestructible.
Price Range and Value:
Given their supreme quality, a huge silk-culture evolves around Tabriz pieces; as a result, they belong to a very high price range. Their larger carpets start from 10' in length, and 6' in width, for the price of $ 15000, and they go all the way to 12' in length, and 8' in width, for the price of $ 30000 and above. Carpet enthusiasts and private collectors sometimes find Tabriz works that come in 100% silk with gold fringes. This is exactly what makes them a very sound investment.
