Introduction:
Knotted for centuries in central and southern regions of the Zagros Mountains, Gabbeh nomadic pieces represent an ancient culture inspired by the traditions and the landscapes of Western Iran. These oriental beauties are coarsely knotted, brightly colored, have a thick pile, and no fringes. In Persian/Farsi (the language of Persia/Iran), the word Gabbeh means something uncut or unclipped.
Description:
As mentioned above, Gabbeh carpets have a thick pile. They are, however, knotted in a relatively low knot density. Similar to Qashqai nomadic rugs; Gabbeh pieces are noted for their stylized flowers, trees, animals, and humans. Generally, these oriental beauties are asymmetrical and knotted to tell a story, with figures and symbols portraying the knotter’s “tale.” It is this subjective procedure that classifies Gabbeh as a unique work of art, distinct from other Persian carpets.
Price Range and Value:
Like Kelims, Gabbehs are generally sold at a much lower price range compared to fine carpets of Tabriz, Isfahan, and Qom. On the other hand, a Gabbeh is always a better investment as opposed to a Kelim, due to its longer life-span. As a result, Gabbehs are usually more expensive than Kelims.
Note:
Beware of "knock-off" Gabbehs from Morocco, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh (just to name a few countries where "knock-off" Gabbehs are sometimes sold as original to foreign tourists). These cheap imitations are usually not hand-knotted, contain chemical dyes, and made with inferior quality of wool and cotton.
