Introduction:
Bidjar pieces are manufactured in most sizes. They are often designed with a medallion right at the center, while the borders are decorated with either floral designs, or herati-like motifs. Besides their heavy weight, Bidjar carpets are also identifiable by their beautiful colour combination. The ground shades usually come in navy blue, bottle green, and cherry red, while the colours used for the designs often include turquoise blue, teal green, and coral pink.
Description:
Bidjar pieces are hand-knotted on vertical looms using cotton, or more rarely wool, as the warp. When it comes to the weft, as many as five threads: four wool alongside a cotton in the center, are used to produce these heavy-weight masterpieces. The warp threads are beaten in with two different tools: the usual comb beater, and a special one; which resembles an enormous iron claw. The knotters insert the claw between the warp threads and beat in the weft threads as many times as they can. This special technique makes Bidjar rugs the heaviest of the Persian carpets, giving them the title of the “Iron Rug of Persia.”
Price Range and Value:
Given their design, colour, and durability, Bidjar pieces grow exponentially in value overtime. Therefore, they are considered to be one of the safest investment options when it comes to oriental rugs.
Note:
The other factor that has contributed to the ever increasing price range of Bidjar carpets, is the shortage of production caused by the occurrence of the Iraq-Iran war in 1980. The sinister 8 year war, which was imposed on Iran by Saddam Hussain, the former Iraqi dictator, effectively destroyed many villages, cities, and communities, including the city of Bidjar, in the Kurdistan province of Iran. As a result many of the local Kurdish population moved away from the city and relocated to the safer parts of Iran.
