Introduction:
Qom carpets/rugs, alongside their counterparts from Tabriz, Isfahan, and Nain, are considered to be some of the finest works of art knotted in the modern Iran (Persia). Almost all the production is concentrated in the city; specifically, in private homes where there are usually two looms. The foundation may either be from cotton or silk, and both materials may be used, either independently or in conjunction. A vast range of colors are used in Qom carpets/rugs: white and ivory are the chief field colors, while the decoration is often in very vivid shades. These colours may be either rich or pastel, and it is not uncommon for an antique wash to be used to subdue the tones and give the impression of mellowness through age.
Description:
The first looms were set up in the city of Qom around the 1920s as a result of the initiative of a group of merchants from Kashan. In spite of this late start, Qom carpets/rugs have taken their place amongst the best due to their high quality and their wide variety of patterns. Being relatively new to the carpet making industry, Qom has no design-tradition of its own and employs the design of other Persian groups as well as some Caucasian groups. One particular pattern that has received some of its prominence from appearing on Qom pieces, is the infamous Botteh Motif. The Botteh is a stylized leaf-like floral symbol that appears similar to a Paisley pattern. Additionally, much use has been made of the Isfahan floral design and the Kashan central medallion design. Other Qom carpets/rugs are inspired by the Bakhtiari square design, though leaning towards a floral interpretation. The border, usually of three bands, is rather small in relation to the size of the carpet.
Price Range and Value:
As mentioned above, Qom's finer Silk-made Signed-pieces are priced as high as their high-end counterparts from Tabriz, Isfahan, and Nain. They are definitely a sound investment as their value always increases over time.
